- trying to find, you know, damaging information on, you know, on political rivals, you know, using, you know, private investigative firms. And they said, well, you know, she worked for Project Veritas. GOLDMAN: Well, as we started reporting on Erik Prince and Richard Seddon, I became deeply interested in learning who, in fact, was working for this organization. The Intercept, however, has stood behind its reporting and has described the suit as an improper attempt to learn the identity of its sources. Ms. Jorge was eventually exposed and kicked out of the campaign office. The life of Erik Prince has been a complicated globe-trotting journey complete with extensive mercenary activities, spying on American citizens, brokering arms deals with despotic regimes and essentially taking advantage of any situation he can in order to line his personal pockets. So what exactly was the plan to (laughter) catch McMaster saying something he shouldn't? At the time, Ms. Spanberger was running to unseat a sitting Republican congressman in a race both parties considered important for control of the House. That was the idea. Their reporting on the department won the 2012 Pulitzer Prize for investigative reporting. So somebody was just waiting - and it turned out to be me and Mark - to come along and make the connection between the Sofia de LaRocca (ph) out in Wyoming and "Maria," quote, unquote, on the Project Veritas Exposed website. GOLDMAN: Well, I don't know if he is primarily the guy. A man named Samuel Chamberlain who matched the description of the one employed by Mr. OKeefe denied he worked for Project Veritas. WASHINGTON Erik Prince, the security contractor with close ties to the Trump administration, has in recent years helped recruit former American and British spies for secretive. I mean, this is - you know, he no doubt sees them as a conservative ally, like other conservative networks. GOLDMAN: Yeah, I would say an active - sure, an active player in certain parts of Trump's world, yeah, or conservative - the conservative world. And he ends up giving, you know, $6,000 to Wyoming Democratic Party and also money to other political figures. DAVIES: Let me reintroduce you again. GOLDMAN: I think - yeah, I think the latest is - you know, he's worked - his latest adventure is in Libya. The document is dated December 2018 and said that Mr. Talbott was another of the names of corrupt individuals from Marti.. One of the undercover operatives also got a job working for a consortium of wealthy liberal donors the Wyoming Investor Network which had made a strategic decision to support Republican moderate candidates over those more closely aligned with Mr. Trumps agenda, the documents say. One celebrated alum: Betsy DeVos's brother, Erik Prince, 49, the swashbuckling military contractor who has come to the serious attention of investigators looking into the Trump team's alleged. They'd been recruited and trained in an operation led by a former British spy and security contractor Erik Prince, an avid supporter of Donald Trump. Those contentions have become a key point of early proceedings in the case. DAVIES: What are Erik Prince's contacts or associations with Donald Trump and the Trump family? Mr. Seddon wrote that Ms. Jorge copied a great many documents from the file room, and Mr. OKeefe bragged that the group would be able to get a ton more access agents inside the educational establishment.. And they were doing this - it appears that they were doing this from the house where Beau and Sofia lived with others. Cole pointed to various records, including a campaign finance document from earlier this year, in which Prince listed his address as being in Virginia. And they will get, you know, negative information from public records. However, in all of the 74 campaign donations hes made since 2002 including a $3,042.86 donation to the Wyoming Republican Party in 2016 Prince has been identified with a Virginia address. And they were deeply critical of Trump. And I got swept away reporting on that and eventually was able to come back to it. Set some context for us here. And then on a parallel but different track, you know, Sofia is trying to make her way through the Young Democrats of Wyoming, the Wyoming Democratic Party, you know, building her bona fides as an eager, young Democrat. Emails sent to Mr. Seddon went unanswered. Beyond involving a different pool of jurors and a different judge, Prince may have a better chance of learning the identity of The Intercepts sources if the case stays in Wyoming, where there is no specific shield law protecting the confidentiality of reporters sources. Prince and Mr. Seddon met in August 2018 with Susan Gore, a Wyoming heiress to the Gore-Tex fortune, Ms. Gore became the projects main benefactor. Did it help, you know, Project Veritas raise more money? The woman was claiming she had been impregnated by the Senate candidate, thinking that The Washington Post would be so excited to get dirt about a conservative that they would publish a bogus story. ADAM GOLDMAN: They went there after making sizable donations to the DNC, the Democratic National Committee - $10,000 each - at the request of a Colorado businessman who was a - he's a fundraiser for the Democrats and basically said, if you make this donation, you can come and hang out in Las Vegas. And so, you know, I can't tell you right now it hasn't, that somebody else isn't doing this. But Trump would, from time to time, cite Project Veritas videos in his, you know, comments, public comments and speeches, right? Mr. Seddons recruitment of Mr. DAVIES: Right. But when I learned about Beau and Sofia last year - there's a website, Project Veritas Exposed. Over the past year and a half, The New York Times has reported on an effort by conservatives to train operatives in undercover spy techniques to infiltrate progressive groups, political campaigns, unions and the offices of Democratic and moderate Republican elected officials. Last month, Project Veritas made public secretly recorded video of a longtime ABC News correspondent who was critical of the networks political coverage and its emphasis on business considerations over journalism. And another individual named Barbara Ledeen, who worked for a prominent senator, his committee - Chuck Grassley - she admitted her involvement, and she had actually said she had met with a Project Veritas operative.
